Some important reminders... ![]() Dear Student,
Welcome home!
As you settle into your new home away from home, we wanted to provide you with some helpful information about our residence services and some timely reminders, while we wait for the rest of your community to move in. We planned to cover some of this information on Monday once everyone arrives, but thought this would be worthwhile for you to have a little earlier!
Front Desk
Residence Front Desk services are available 24/7. If you lock yourself out of your room, have a question, or need to pick up a package, our front desk staff are here to help! They can also be reached at the following phone numbers (program your front desk number into your phone!)
Dining Halls
Dining halls are open every day from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. in Elgin Hall and Perth Hall). You’ll notice floor stickers or tape designating where to stand for the lineup before entering. Please ensure that you are physically distanced from others while in line—only one person per floor sticker or piece of tape.
Dining hall tables and chairs are set up as per our local health unit guidelines; each chair is physically distanced six feet from each other. We kindly ask that you NOT move dining hall chairs from their designated place in front of a green sticker—it has been spaced appropriately for your own health and safety. Booths are typically limited to one or two people, and the green circles will help you understand how it’s set up.
![]() While some students may have roommates and consider themselves in each other’s bubbles, we ask that if seated in the dining hall, you keep your chairs in their designated places, six feet apart. It will be less worrisome and confusing for others who aren’t aware you’re roommates, and will also ensure the appropriate sections are cleaned and sanitized.
Face Coverings and Space Capacity Limits
We wanted to thank everyone for their commitment in taking care of each other. Everyone has done an incredible job ensuring that you’re wearing masks/face coverings while indoors, as per government requirements.
While outdoors, if you are in the presence of others and unable to physically distance, we ask that you wear your face coverings. For all of Orientation Week, there will be other attendees at the outdoor events that you’ll attend, so make sure you have your mask handy! If you’re outside and walking to class by yourself, wearing a mask is entirely up to you and your comfort level.
You should have received two Western masks in your personal residence care kit during move-in. Residence students can pick up two additional Western masks at the Great Hall in Somerville House, between 11 a.m.–4 p.m. everyday until September 18; a perfect errand to run if you’re not sure what to do today or Monday while you wait for the rest of the building to arrive.
Please also take note of capacity signs outside of elevators and common spaces. Do not use the space if its capacity limit has been reached. You are encouraged to take the stairs if the elevators get full.
Book Store
To avoid long lineups at the Book Store, buy your textbooks, school supplies or Western merch online. Make sure you select ‘Curbside Pickup’ during checkout, and you’ll be notified by email when your order is ready. Curbside pickups will be available at the Great Hall in Somerville House, between 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. every day until September 18 (same place as your Western mask pickups).
---
You’ll likely hear these reminders a few times over the next couple days. Remember that we have new community members joining every day who haven’t heard this information. Feel free to take the time to explain this to your incoming community members and don’t hesitate to show them the ropes!
Thanks for taking care and doing your part to keep your new friends and the community safe and healthy. Again, welcome home!
Chris Alleyne
